FAQ # 1

Amanda - My daughter is 16 yrs old and she's always been prone to canker sores. She has been diagnosed with alkaline reflux and has decalcification on the enamel of her teeth theoretically thought to be caused by medications in early tooth development. The canker sores presently manifested about 2 months ago just before being diagnosed with infectious mono. She just got the OK to participate in gym and activity and broke out again with 4 more canker sores. We have tried zilactin b and lysine and salt water/baking soda/peroxide and none of them seem to work. If you have any homeopathic suggestions I would be glad to know. Thank you.

Dr. Zeines - Eat a mineral rich diet, add foods that will make your body more alkaline. Stay away from anything that will put stress on the nervous system such as caffeine and alcohol. Foods rich in the amino acid arginine, chocolate, peanut butter, nuts and onions seem to be associated with a higher incidence. Plenty of salads, raw and cooked vegetables, whole grains (eliminate wheat if possible) and potatoes (baked or steamed). Green vegetables are the best source of minerals.

The following supplements should be taken:
Lysine - 500mg, 3x/day
Vitamin C - 500mg 6x/day
Vitamin B-Complex - Take a high stress formula at least 100mg 3x/day
Acidophilus - follow label directions
Garlic 2-3x/day

FAQ #2

Peter - I recently went to my dentist and informed him that I needed to remove my amalgam fillings. Two were removed, but I found the replaced fillings extremely sensitive. Also, during the procedure I believe I swallowed some of the mercury. How do I rid my body of what I have swallowed and is there a different replacement filling that does not result in a less sensitive bite or tooth? Thanks.

Dr. Zeines - You need to go on a detox program ... check the section under mercury detox.

1-get on detox for mercury and have fillings replaced

FAQ # 5

I too have problems with grinding and TMJ. I had a mouth guard made, but I simply cannot sleep with something in my mouth like that! If I do fall asleep, it ends up out of my mouth and on the floor somewhere during the night. Do you have any other suggestions for dealing with TMJ and the chronic pain associated with it? I have been to many doctors, dentists, and oral surgeons. I was given the options of a high-risk surgery or a mouth guard and high dose anti-inflammatory daily to deal with pain. I do have silver color fillings in several teeth (#2, #31, #30 and bottom wisdom tooth), and I have gold crown (wisdom tooth behind #1 - root canal), I have root canal in #14 and #18 with porcelain crown. I have terrible teeth.

Dr. Zeines - First forget the high-risk surgery!!! Not a good idea long term anti-inflammatory also bad question to ask why is this happening???

First - grinding could be from parasites could also be from allergies of toxicity of materials in mouth for example lets say you have a gold crown and a mercury filling... because that materials are different they have a different electrical potential that difference can create a very small electrical charge in your mouth you will not feel this on a conscious level but subconsciously you will be aware of it. In order to prevent this charge from happening, you will keep you teeth together (clenching or grinding) your bite could be off from past restorations mouth guards can be effective and so can chiropractic adjustments.

FAQ # 6

Jillian - I was wondering about the toxicity of mercury in relation to its contribution to autoimmune disease (esp. Rheumatoid Arthritis). Also is there a mercury removal protocol and how important is it to have a chelation after. And is it possible to slow the effects of mercury toxicity with plant foods? Thank you so for your work and dedication to holistic dentistry. In light, Jillian.

Dr. Zeines - ... while there is not definitive data there are many studies on Hg toxicity and the fact that the immune systems ability to respond to a problem is compromised. However you are referring to an autoimmune problem, which is more, a breakdown of immune system functioning rather then mercury toxicity. An autoantibody known as rheumatoid factor seems to be present in Rheumatoid arthritis check under mercury for a good detox program chelation does not have to be done but staying on a good high chlorophyll rich diet does.

FAQ # 7

Mary - did I hear you say that it's possible to regrow bone? A family member is about to have bone replacement in her mouth (taking some from her hip) in order to eventually have implants put in. Is this something that you would recommend or are there alternatives. Thanks for your reply.

Dr. Zeines - the supplements we use are designed to help stimulate bone growth but your family member seems to be beyond that. Take foods that are high in antioxidants!!! and do the alkaline diet under periodontal disease
